Rehabbing Readers: DIY Wall Art

I laughed at my choice of title above.  I often wonder if this post gets listed in google searches about actual rehab.  I probably get enough post views to make it on page 1,000 of that google search but I wouldn’t mind it being found.  DIY is a great way to productively use your time and creative energy!  Maybe it could give someone a new love.

Anyway, of course you know that this blog is about interior design rehabs on a DIY budget.  There are lots of blogs out there with projects of their readers. I hesitated to become another blog that does this when you can find so much stuff out there. (some of my faves are oneprettything and knockoff decor)   This DIY world is a phenomenon.  Especially with HGTV, the blogosphere, and Pinterest.  I made the decision to go for the reader rehabs for the following reason:

As I looked back on life I realized that my mom could have rocked a great DIY blog  in her younger years.  Really she could even now.  She could have been the first big blogger.  She sewed everything in my home, painted furniture, always tried new recipes, was (and is) a fun and creative party host, cross-stiched everything on our walls, made every costume I ever had to wear, made my clothes, and was creative and fun with me.  In my eyes, the Pioneer Woman has got nothin’ on her! People would have loved to know how she did it.  The ideas where out of her head most of the time.  Back then you weren’t saturated with the internet so your areas of inspiration were magazines,which I don’t really remember seeing around the house.  Due to lack of technology, she didn’t have a platform, and even if it were there, she didn’t have time.  She was a working mom with some serious creative ability.  That last sentence got me thinking,  there are probably lots of people out there like her…no time, yet really creative.   These reader rehabs are a tribute to my mom.  They are for anyone, with time or no time, that wants to show off a creative accomplishment.     While I am  waiting and excited to see your projects, I have decided to start off  by showing you some of the accomplishments of readers who are also my friends.  These woman are all busy single women, moms, wives, and students but somehow are making greatness happen.  If all that it turns out to be is getting to share and see projects with my friends.  Its worth it to me.

Today I want to share what Erika did in her bedroom.  If you have been reading this blog long enough you might remember the king sized duvet I sewed for Erika.  A few posts later I posted a Grey and Yellow Bedroom Moodboard:

Erika called me and said that she slowly wanted to incorporate things from this Mood Board with her own DIY twist.  I was thrilled and excited I could help get some ideas swirling in her head so she, herself, could make her room look great.  Today I wanted to share a piece of art that she decided to DIY for her bedroom.

First let me explain,  I posted the above moodboard before my relationship with Pinterest began.  My original moodboard included this piece of art pictured below but I could not find the source to give the creator/store credit.  So, I took it off my moodboard. Thanks to Pinterest I now can give the artist credit.

If you haven’t gotten a chance to look at Cellar Designs on Etsy, check it out.  They have some great stuff over there for your home or for gifts.  I would love to give this to someone for their nursery.

Anyway, Erika saw the first moodboard and got inspiration from the above piece.  She loved the stencil and the wood combination, so she rehabbed up her own spin on wood and stencil art.  What’s even greater is that she did it on a budget.  Here is what she came up with:

Don’t you just love the perfection in the imperfection?   I love how the off-centered wood, and unique planks come together.  It makes me feel like Erika found the perfect, vintage sign on a fence, grabbed a saw, cut it  out and put it on her wall.  It has character, and its unique to her home.  Thats what DIY does.   What a sweet quote and  a great reminder for a marriage.  We all know that in marriage we sometimes don’t feel this way, but if you believe it to be true, no matter what you feel, you will make it through the challenging times.  What a stylish way to give ya a little reminder of what you believe about your spouse!  Enough of that philosophical tangent…where did that come from?  Anyway, Here is its location in her bedroom:
