A Little Bit Shady

Jennifer —  January 9, 2013 — 2 Comments

Lee and I are moving along with the house we are renovating and I have more posts to share soon, but I wanted to share a little project that I did over Christmas break.  I have been wanting a roman shade for my kitchen window.  Five years ago I bought some plain white roman shades for my living room bay window.  These were a temporary privacy fix until I found something else in the living room.  I don’t have a picture but you can see here that I have changed then out for bamboo shades.

The smaller window’s shades moved to the guest bedroom for a short season and the large roman shade moved to the laundry room as seen here.

Thrift Store Dishes

Jennifer —  November 23, 2012 — Leave a comment

I hope all of you had a very Happy Thanksgiving.  My guess is that you all are out shopping and getting those Black Friday deals, but I am staying home today.  While you are busy saving money on Christmas gifts, I want to share with you a way my friend Jane saved money on her dishes.  This is a great post for all you college kids or newlyweds that do not have a ton of money but need stuff for your apartment or house.   When I went over to their house last week to take pictures, I opened up her kitchen cabinets.  (I wasn’t snooping, she was telling me about this and told me to)  This is what I found:

Fiestaware dishes, thrift store dishes, iloverehabs.com

Fiesta Dishware is a dishware that has been around for a long time. They come out with new colors and people are always looking for their color if they need a replacement.  Every flea market I go into, I see pieces for $1.00 or sometimes less.  I would be hard to find one full set of the same color, but picking up plates here and there, over time, you get a collection like Janes.

Its Official, we have had the Filtrete Filtered Drinking Water System in our home for a week.  I decided to have both Lee (the Hubs) and my review done separately.  I am the emotional one and he is the logical one so hopefully both reviews can give you insight.

Make sure you tune in tomorrow because one lucky reading will win the Filtrete Drinking Water System that we installed!

The Hub’s Review

A few weeks ago the nice folks over at 3M emailed me and asked me if I wanted to try out their product:

The Filtrete High Performance Drinking Water System with Maximum Filtration Plus.

 Blog Words

This is how the product was described to me:

  • Entire system only costs $100
  • Has a space saving design that mounts under your kitchen sink
  • A dedicated faucet easily mounts onto your countertop next to the kitchen faucet
  • Reduces contaminants from water including select VOCs, select pharmaceuticals, microbial cysts and lead
  • Filters last up to six months, and changes are quick and easy with no tools required

All these things listed sounded appealing so I took some time to think about if I wanted to try it.  I have been asked to promote a few things throughout the last year and turned them down because they did not meet my rules for trying out products are as follows

  1. It has to be something that I would use in my own home and would benefit my family
  2. It has to be something that would benefit my readers and their families.

The cost of good water can be expensive. I have always considered the kitchen sink filtered water faucets to be high end.  I have only seen them in high-end homes, therefore, I never looked into the possibility in my kitchen. Our tap water has a not-so-great taste to it.  My dad and his wife don’t like to drink our water when they come to visit.  The Hubs and I purchase bottled water, hence the need for the storage of non-refridgerated water here:

 Modge Podge Bin, iloverehabs.com

We also have a Brita Water filter that we love, but honestly we don’t use it as much as we should.  Not only are we are lazy to go get more filters when they run out, we are lazy in refilling it.  You have to let the filter soak when you exchange it and it takes time to refill the pitcher.  Please don’te judge me.  I am just being honest and vulnerable about my impatience with all things cooking, preparing, and eating.

When the Hubs and I decide to do a house upgrade project, we first decide if its cost effective.  So I decided to do the math on what we spend on water.

Tune In….

Jennifer —  October 22, 2012

It has been such a relaxing weekend that I am sad that Monday had to roll around.  Today I am traveling again for work.  It will be a crazy week but I promise to make time for posting.  Today I am going to share with you how we installed our HD Digital Antenna/ Tuner.  First thin I Broke My Ex Girlfriends Virginity Does That Mean We Can Get Back Together gs first,  here is the Antenna we purchased.

 Clearstream Digital HDTV Antenna, iloverehabs.com

It is the Antenna’s Direct ClearStream4 HDTV Antenna.  We purchased this antenna from Amazon.  Here is the antenna in all its glory.

The Hubs wanted me to tell all of you that you need to check AntennaPoint.com.  This website shows you where all the digital transmitting stations are in your area.  This is how you know where to face your antenna to get a signal. You can install this thing on your house.  It didn’t look durable enough to me.  The Hubs read that you can install it in your attic and it will still pick up a signal.  I don’t know how you would do this if you had a two-story house but for all you single story home owners I will share with you how we installed into our attic.

Where I Watch the Game….

Jennifer —  October 12, 2012 — Leave a comment

If you have read this blog long enough you know that I am a die-hard Oklahoma Sooner.  Tomorrow is a very important day for me.  It is  the day that my Oklahoma Sooners play our rival…the Texas Longhorns.  The game is played in Dallas which is considered a neutral site because it is in between both schools.   There are many great rivalries in college football out there but I am not sure if there is more of a fun and unique environment for a rivalry.  The game is played in the Cotton Bowl Stadium which is smack dab in the middle of the Texas State Fair.

The tickets are split 50/50 so the dividing line for the fans is literally the 50 yard line.  From an aerial view, one side is orange and one side is red.

You can see what the 50 yard line looks like on both side of the stadium.

I might be wrong but this is the only college football game where you can leave the stadium and get on a tilt-a-whirl.

It is here, before the game, where the Hubs and I toured the Net Zero home.  Yes, they literally built a Net Zero show home in the state fair.

Here is me in the shower of the tiny home, which is was built right next to the Net Zero Home.   On another note, it is weird to see my hair blonde again.

iloverehabs.com

There have been more years of my life that I have been to this game, but unfortunately this year I will not be able to be there.  Its okay, I have grieved but that’s life…you don’t always get to do what you want to.  (If you don’t know me, I am being over dramatic right now.  I am truly okay.)

Why am I telling you this?  A few years ago the Hubs and I decided to get rid of cable.  We explain how we live life without  cable here.  If you think we are crazy…I really think that its better without it.  We once paid about $1200 in cable/internet bills a year.  We now pay $400 a year in internet/Netflix bills.  That is $800 in savings!!!  That is 7 OU/TX tickets (if you are a lucky person to get them at face value) and some extra for a few corn dogs at the fair.

Next week I am going to give an extensive “How I Watch” post because I literally have not missed any thing important except for College Football.  It was okay because if the game was important, I would go to a friends house or watch it on ESPN3.com.  We did miss sitting on our couch and watching a good game.  The Hubs did a little research and found out that an HD digital tuner might really help us get college and NFL games.  It would also help us get the news and regular programing.  My #1 rule was that nothing bulky would be in the house or seen on the roof.  (I don’t mind seen in the back yard on the roof…but not on the front.)  Here is the digital HD tuner that we purchased.

 Clearstream4 Digital HDTV Antenna, iloverehabs.com

I will explain more in my upcoming post but this $80 purchase from Amazon now allows us to get ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, FOX SPORTS (when its played on FOX which is usually the evening game.)  We also randomly get CW, Court TV, and the weather channel.  What is even better is that al the channels come in clearly in HD.  Here is me watching the OU game in my living room.

I Have No Cord Love

Onto the post for today.  Have you ever wondered what the builders were thinking when they built your house?  Don’t you wish that you could reverse time and go back to when they were building your home and say “Don’t put that outlet there…you should put it here?”  Maybe you would want to tell them to center the fan over the table just in case someone wants to change it out for a pendent light. Or maybe you would tell them it might not be a good idea to put a french door for the door that goes into the garage.  Yes, all those things are things I wish I could have suggested to the builder of my house.  Check out the fan in my kitchen, and the view from the french door that once was in my kitchen.

Today, I want to show you how I overcame the outlet issue.  This builder’s choice in this instance really isn’t that bad.  How were they to know where I wanted to put my flat screen t.v?  The outlet placement didn’t really work with my new, open-backed, bookshelves in my living room.  I do wish the outlet was behind the t.v so I could place our electronics on the top shelf and hide all the wires behind the t.v.  Instead I had to deal with this:

Yuck.  Our cable cord comes up through the wall/floor here:

Of course the outlet was perfectly placed partially behind one of the shelves.  I couldn’t avoid this because I needed a certain amount of space between the fabric covered shelf and bookcase for the t.v.  The halfway point for the bookcase is right where the outlet was.

Here is how I got my shelves from this:

To this:

Do you see the two baskets with lids?  The baskets didn’t come with lids,  I just cut a piece of wood to fit over the top and covered it with leftover fabric from here.  The basket on the left side stores my DVDs.  The basket on the right stores this:

See all that cord craziness?  It is actually all organized because its looped and labeled.  It looks crazy because there are alot, so it’s all crammed in, but you can tell what goes to what and get to it pretty easily.  Here is the cable mess I had to tame:

  • Cable Line to Modem (we don’t have cable t.v.  our cable service is for our internet.  I will post how we live life without cable soon)
  • Modem to Roku (internet streaming device for your t.v)
  • Modem to apple airport thing. (Not sure what that does but it does something because if you unplug it nothing works)
  • DVD Player to t.v
  • cord from Roku to t.v. (to watch Netflix and amazon and Hulu)
  • And then all the devices power cords  (that’s 5 power chords including the t.v)

So I decided to put our power strip in the basket and cut a hole in the back of the basket for the cord to go to the outlet

I also poked holes in the basket for the t.v. cord and cable chord to come in.  I then made a lid for the basket using the same wood and fabric as I did for the other basket.  Instead, I drilled a hole into the back of the lid for wires to come out. ( I ended up have to make the hole a little bigger than pictured)

aaa

I organized the wires, plugged them in, fed them though the holes and attached them to their devices.  There were a few chords that connected device to device, I just put those devices together and if there was excess, fed it down through the hole.  This is what I came up with:

The only problem was the wires coming from the back of the t.v.

I knew that these would be hidden for the most part behind my decor but I wanted it tucked away nicely so I nailed a nail behind the chords:

The nail holds the cords behind the devices quite nicely.

All that was Left was hiding the cable chord.

A fabric covered box (that also holds DVDs) with some books on top did the trick nicely.  Due to iTunes, amazon, and Roku we rarely watch our limited collection of DVDs so I rarely have to get into the boxes. The fabric covered box was once an old Pi Phi angel box that my “Big Sis” in my sorority gave me.  ITs a sturdy box so I couldn’t get rid of it, but I just didn’t feel right sportin’  the college love front in center in my living room. So I covered the box with fabric.

Once I got the best of the stuff in there was definitely not any evidence of chords.

I did have to make a last minute switch that I thought I would share just incase you do something like this.  Do you see how my devices are stacked on top of each other?

Stacking them like this didn’t allow the devices to vent out their heat well.  They were getting hot because one would vent into the other and it make both of them HOT!  So, I had to separate them.  It was not hard, I  just had to get some slack out of the hole on some of them.  I moved two on top of a book which sat on top of the DVD player.  The good news is the DVD player is rarely used AND vents out the left side! Finally something that I didn’t have to overcome.   I didn’t like the empty space above the white apple airport device.

So I just cut some wood and wrapped it with scrapbook paper.

aaa

I actually like the added color.

There is how I hid my cords!  Do any of you hate cords as much as I do?  Sometimes there is nothing you can do but if there is an inkling of a chance…I always try to hide them.  The great thing is I spent $0 to do it!

Update:  stacking my electronic devices didn’t allow for some of them to vent out their heat so we updated this by separating them with small pieces of wood between them if the vent was out of the top of the device instead of the side or front.

Jennifer
